For the past thirteen years, I have been married to an active duty Airman--surrounded by a world of military existence. "Military Wife" is not a label, but it is a perspective which allows me to have a window of privileged access to the humanity behind those serving. The transition of a person forcibly bent from unique individual to masked conformist who is stripped of themselves, to redefining one's selfhood in a new life role can be unsettling and misunderstood. When fitting oneself into a new identity, the future of individuality--often in a dangerous landscape--can be tumultuous.
